How to Choose a Parts Cleaner.
With the wide variety of professional automotive parts washers on the market these days, it can get confusing what type to choose.
There are many good choices on the market these days. The question is - What type of parts washer best suits your application?
If you are the typical auto shop, you may want to get a drum mount model. This style is very popular for the typical garage. It allows you to clean parts in a sink style unit, up out of the solvent, and typically can be used in conjunction with a flow through brush so you can clean your parts more effectively. Another popular style is the basin style parts washer that allows you to place the part in a large capacity sink area that contains the detergent. This differs from the drum mount model in that the detergent is in your working area, and you can place your parts in this area to let it to soak for some time, allowing the cleaning agent to go to work on the dirt, oil and grime while you walk off to perform other work. You can then come back a little while later to
finish up manually cleaning off your parts.
Another options would be spray wash cabinet. This type of model would be used for large parts like transmissions or engine blocks. There are side loading or top loading models available. This type of parts washer offers the ability to clean the part with multiple jets of heated cleaning agent spraying onto the part at high pressure. This is a very effective cleaning method.
One valuable addition to your parts washer would be a filtration system. Adding a filter option adds many more hours of life to your cleaning agent. This means you can save a significant amount of money and pays for itself in no time.
The next question to ask yourself is - Do you want a water based, or solvent based parts washer? Both have very strong followings. Water based cleaning agents come as a concentrate. You would typically mix it somewhere around 6 parts water to 1 part detergent. Water based detergents have come a long way and when used with a heated parts washer, can clean almost as effectively as a solvent cleaning agent. They are also more environmentally and user friendly as well. Plus, it is easier to dispose of the waste. Solvent parts washers are typically more affordable, and in some cases, can clean more effectively, which is why some people choose this style still.
